چکیده

This paper presents the development of piezoelectric artificial cochlear (P-AC) capable of analyzing incoming acoustic or mechanical signals without external power source. The P-AC consists of membrane part and package part. The package part provides liquid environment through which the incoming signal is transmitted to membrane part. The membrane part responds to the transmitted signal and local area of the membrane part vibrates differently depending on its local resonant frequency. Previously in our group, we have demonstrated the feasibility of the P-AC with trapezoidal membrane part as sound analyzer by using mouth simulator as a sound input. In this research, we modified the P-AC to have the membrane part of logarithmically varying width. Also by incorporating mico-actuator into the package part that mimic the function of stapes bone in middle ear, we created similar environment to cochlear where human basilar membrane vibrates. The fabricated P-AC successfully demonstrates frequency separation of incoming mechanical signal from microactuator into several frequency bands within human hearing range.

Mechanical and Electrical Characterization of Piezoelectric Artificial Cochlear Device and Biocompatible Packaging

This paper presents the development of a piezoelectric artificial cochlea (PAC) device capable of analyzing vibratory signal inputs and converting them into electrical signal outputs without an external power source by mimicking the function of human cochlea within an audible frequency range. The PAC consists of an artificial basilar membrane (ABM) part and an implantable packaged part. The pac...

Application of Piezoelectric and Functionally Graded Materials in Designing Electrostatically Actuated Micro Switches

In this research, a functionally graded microbeam bonded with piezoelectric layers is analyzed under electric force. Static and dynamic instability due to the electric actuation is studied because of its importance in micro electro mechanical systems, especially in micro switches. In order to prevent pull-in instability, two piezoelectric layers are used as sensor and actuator. A current amplif...

Cornelia De Lange Syndrome and Cochlear Implantation

Introduction: Literature regarding the different degrees of hearing loss in patients with Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CDLS) reports that half of the affected patients exhibit severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. We present the first pre-school child with CDLS who underwent cochlear implantation for congenital profound sensorineural hearing loss.   Case Report: A 3-year-old boy with CD...

Expressive Language Development in 45 Cochlear Implanted Children Following 2 Years of Implantation

Objectives: Profound hearing loss encounters children with delay in speech and language. As it is known language acquisition in young deaf children is a lengthy process, but cochlear implanted children have better spoken language skills than if they had not received the device. According to the importance of cochlear implant in deaf childchr('39')s language development, this study evaluates the...
